Board Member Feature: Tamar Barr
Tamar’s relationship with Folklorama goes back may years from when she first started to dance with the Sarah Sommer Chai Folk Ensemble. Tamar’s passion for Israeli dance and performing led to a 20-year tenure with the Sarah Sommer Chai Folk Ensemble as a dancer/performer, choreographer, workshop leader, dance director, and artistic director. Tamar maintained a strong connection to Israel Pavilion – Shalom Square by filling a variety of roles including as a committee member, volunteer, and as the Pavilion Coordinator for close to 20 years.
Currently, Tamar sits on the G.R.O.W. (Gaining Resources Our Way) summer program committee and the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba’s Special Grants Committee. The intersection of culture and community has always resonated with Tamar, and she looks forward to contributing to Folklorama and supporting its enhancement, engagement, and growth.
Tamar Barr has close to 30 years of experience in the non-profit and community-services sectors. Her professional expertise includes program development and management, community relations and communications, staff management, as well as advocacy, outreach, and engagement. Tamar received her Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Manitoba and her Masters of Social Work degree from Yeshiva University in New York City. Currently, Tamar serves as the Director of Engagement and Education at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
