Empowering Girls through Experiences
When girls get together, amazing things happen. But they happen because of Girl Guide leaders like Tamara Elias.
Girl Guides of Canada–Guides du Canada is the leading organization for girls and women in Canada, with 97, 000 members across the country. Guiding offers the widest range of activities of any extracurricular activity for girls and young women, with opportunities to explore the arts, sciences, outdoor challenges, global awareness and so much more through enriching experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.
Recently, Elias, who is also the Deputy Provincial Commissioner of Girl Guides of Manitoba, brought Folklorama at School to her Brownies (7-8 years old), Girl Guides (9-11 years old), Pathfinders (12-14), and Rangers (15-17) with a Pow Wow Fit class with Shanley Spence.
“Girl Guides is a catalyst for girls empowering girls”, states Elias. “We provide girls with the opportunity to try new experiences, challenge themselves and build their confidence, all within a safe environment. Hearing about the Folklorama at School program, we knew this was something that we wanted our girls to be a part of. When I called and learned about Shanley Spence and her ability to educate our girls about the beauty of the Pow Wow, I knew she would inspire our girls.”
And inspire she did. Here is some of the feedback:
“She was really cool”, states Maddison, a 10-year-old Girl Guide. “I had a lot of fun while learning about her culture.”
“I had seen a Pow Wow on TV, but didn’t understand what it was about”, says 15-year-old Ranger, Reece. “Shanley explained what it was about, she talked about her life, and how she got involved. She even has a spirit name which I thought was beautiful.”
“Seeing the girls interacting, and asking questions was fantastic”, states Elias. “We will definitely book Folklorama at School again and have already recommended it to other guiding groups across Winnipeg.”
Empowering, challenging, and engaging – that’s what today’s Girl Guides and Folklorama at School are all about. Thank you, Tamara, for introducing Folklorama at School to the girls of the future.
