Board Member Feature: Althea Gederon

Althea was born in Trinidad and Tobago and is deeply proud of her ethno-cultural heritage. Finding ways to share the joy, beauty, and rich traditions of Caribbean culture with the whole community – family, friends, neighbours, co-workers, and visitors to Winnipeg – is the theme linking her activities in many community organizations.

Althea has been an active member of the Cari-Cana Association of Winnipeg, the Cari-Cana Singers, the Council of Caribbean Organizations of Manitoba, the Congress of Black Women, and the Trinidad and Tobago Society of Winnipeg. She has served in many capacities with the Caribbean Pavilion, including as their four-time Pavilion Coordinator, and in 2017 was awarded the Al Malbranck Memorial Award for Outstanding Coordinators.

While still a Pavilion Coordinator, Althea also became a member of the Folklorama Steering Committee and has since served the organization as a member of the Board of Directors, as Chair of the Membership Committee, and as a member of the Finance Committee.

Althea has spent most of her career in government and is currently employed with the City of Winnipeg’s Public Service. As an experienced administrative staff person, she has comprehensive knowledge of public sector systems, policies, procedures, protocols, and administrative standards. As much as she enjoys her work with the city, she is looking forward to retirement so she can spend more time with her family, and in particular her three beautiful granddaughters.
