In the heart of Winnipeg, a vibrant tapestry of cultures intertwined at the Manitoba Hydro–Folklorama Newcomer Welcome Initiative, a beacon for newcomers navigating their new home. As the presenting partner, Manitoba Hydro wasn’t just a name; it represented a commitment to inclusivity and a celebration of diversity.
For this initiative, Folklorama invited a group of newcomers to Winnipeg to travel in style via Beaver Bus Lines motorcoach to our annual Casinos of Winnipeg Folklorama Kick-off! These individuals were also clients of N.E.E.D.S. Inc., a non-profit organization that provides employment and education development services for those who are new to our City and Province, to assist with their transition to their new home.
“This is what it means to belong,” said Rena Journault, Community Investment and Public Safety Specialist for Manitoba Hydro, ‘it is a great feeling to witness that transformation.”
At the kick-off, these newcomer guests were able to watch performances from various ethno-cultural artists, check out the Pavilion Expo, and families got to enjoy the activities in the Winnipeg 150 Kid’s Zone! As well, each newcomer guest received a gift bag, courtesy of Manitoba Hydro, which included Carbon Monoxide detectors for each family, and a complimentary pack of Folklorama Pavilion admissions for everyone!
Working alongside N.E.E.D.S. Inc., Manitoba Hydro feels a profound connection to its mission. Programs are crafted that not only introduce new residents to the Festival but also foster deeper cultural exchanges. It wasn’t just about attendance; it was about creating lasting relationships and a sense of community.
The Festival serves as a microcosm of what Manitoba Hydro hopes to achieve year-round: creating a space where everyone feels valued. Being an official partner of the Folklorama Festival goes beyond sponsorship; it is an opportunity to celebrate each story.
With every initiative, every partnership, and every story shared, Manitoba Hydro knew they were building a brighter future—one where everyone, no matter their background, could find a place to call home.
