When did you start volunteering with Folklorama, and what Pavilion?
I began volunteering with Folklorama in 2010, at the age of 4, when my family helped establish the Punjab Pavilion. My father was the Pavilion Coordinator for several years, and my family managed various departments. I pitched in wherever I could—welcoming guests, teaching dance moves, and learning about their cultures. I was fascinated by the similarities and differences among people and developed a deep love for learning long before starting elementary school.
Why did you join the Folklorama Youth Council?
Growing up in a family that values selflessness and community service naturally drew me to volunteering. My passion led me to take leadership roles in my school, including the student leadership council and as president of the entrepreneurship program. After high school, I felt lost without these commitments. As a university student, I wanted to engage in initiatives with a broader impact, which led me to the Folklorama Youth Council. The Festival profoundly shaped my upbringing and values, making it a perfect fit for me.
Why is volunteering and showcasing your culture important to you?
Volunteering and showcasing one’s culture is vital for fostering a sense of belonging. Everyone has a unique and valuable identity. By sharing our cultures, we contribute to a future where people are confident in their true selves and abilities. Volunteering also allows for personal growth through collaboration with others who share the same goal. I believe my development into who I am today is a result of the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve had through volunteering.
When thinking about #SharedFuture—what thoughts do you have for a Shared Future for Winnipeg Youth?
Winnipeg’s youth are resilient and strong. Growing up in this city and meeting people from diverse backgrounds, I’ve always admired their strength and commitment to their beliefs. For our #SharedFuture, I envision engaged, proactive members of society who strive for positive change and work toward a better tomorrow.
