In the heart of Winnipeg, a city rich with culture and history, lies a cornerstone of the community: Safeway. Established in 1929, Safeway has grown and evolved over its 95-year history. In 2013 when Sobeys Inc. acquired Safeway Canada, it marked the beginning of a new chapter in its history. Through the years, Safeway has maintained its dedication to community engagement, supporting local Festivals, charities, and promoting diversity and inclusion.
Safeway’s partnership with Folklorama, the world’s largest and longest-running multicultural Festival of its kind, was inspired by a shared vision. “Partnering with Folklorama provides us an opportunity to further strengthen our communities,” said Julie Sue Wood, Vice President of Operations for the Prairie Division, Safeway. “Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is fueled by our purpose and values. Food brings people together to share cultural experiences, so partnering with Folklorama is a perfect opportunity to celebrate cultures from around the world and grow our strong community partnerships.”
Safeway was particularly excited about the upcoming Folklorama Festival. “As an organization, we are most looking forward to supporting Pavilions and growing our partnerships in the community, “The Festival brings a palpable excitement to our store teammates and customers alike, creating an atmosphere of celebration and learning.”
“The partnership between Safeway and Folklorama exemplifies how businesses can play a pivotal role in fostering cultural understanding and community spirit”, said Teresa Cotroneo, Executive Director, Folklorama. By bringing the world’s cultures to their customers and supporting local Festivals, Safeway continues to uphold its legacy of community engagement and inclusivity, making Winnipeg a richer and more diverse place to live.
