Ramadan

As we launch #CelebrateEverything, this Sunday, March 10th over 20,000 Muslims in Manitoba will begin observing Ramadan – a month of fasting and self-reflection – and as such we are proud to have Ramandan as our first feature.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar that has special significance for Muslims all over the world, including many Folklorama members of numerous ethno-cultural origins. It is a time of observance of faith through fasting and spiritual reflection. During this month, connection with family and community are cherished.  The end of the month is marked by a celebration known as Eid Al Fitr, which lasts for 3 days.

The richness of tradition is seen through cultural attire, customary foods and so much more that we look forward to sharing with you!

We had the privilege of sitting down with Folklorama member, Delvinder Kaur, to gain insight into how her family specifically observes Ramadan. Further your understanding by watching her interview. Ramadan Mubarak!

Eid al-fitr

Eid al-Fitr is a Muslim holiday that brings together people from many ethno-cultural communities here in Manitoba. Year after year, thousands of people gather in neighbourhoods around the province. Services are also held in French for francophone Muslims. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and it’s a time that family and friends come together to celebrate. It is a time of joy, forgiveness, and generosity. Muslims typically dress in their finest clothes, decorate their homes with lights and other decorations, and prepare special foods to share with loved ones.
