Donor Profile: Jim Court
Jim Court joined the Folklorama Family in 1991 as a volunteer at the Pavilion of Scotland manning a cultural display booth, where he shared various aspects of Scottish culture with visitors.
“Sharing culture has allowed me to see others in a different light and recognize that we are diverse, those differences make for a more dynamic society where we respect and grow through each other’s strengths,” said Court.
From there he volunteered as security, joined the Board of Directors, and has been both treasurer and ran admissions for the Pavilion of Scotland. In 1999, he became Pavilion Coordinator and joined the Folklorama Steering Committee.
Still, Court wanted to increase his outstanding volunteerism by serving on Folklorama’s Board of Directors and eventually becoming President of the Board of Directors in 2009. Since then and in the present day, Jim continues to be a member of the Folklorama Finance Committee and a Donor to Folklorama’s Cultural Preservation Fund.
The Folklorama Cultural Preservation Fund is a permanent endowment fund established at The Winnipeg Foundation. This Fund, will provide Folklorama members access to funds to help grow youth initiatives for ongoing or new projects that celebrate, educate, promote, and preserve culture for many years to come.
“When youth are involved in the cultures of their communities it engages them, making them better overall citizens and more likely to succeed in the future,” said Court. “When they are exposed to the cultures of others positively it helps eliminate the prejudice and bias which makes multicultural work and our society better as a whole.”
Thank you, Jim for all of your hard work and dedication to keeping culture alive.
