Celebrating 50 years of Magdaragat Philippines Inc.
Folklorama member Magdaragat Philippines Inc. is celebrating 50 years of promoting Philippine culture in Winnipeg and across Manitoba. The non-profit cultural organization is dedicated to sharing Filipino heritage primarily through dance and the performing arts. Through traditional Filipino folk dance, ballet, contemporary dance, martial arts, theatre, and music, the group brings together performers of all ages to create vibrant, colourful performances that celebrate the richness of Filipino heritage. In 2026, the organization marks its 50th anniversary, a major milestone that highlights five decades of cultural celebration, community building, and artistic expression.

Founded in 1976 by Dante C. Buenaventura, Magdaragat Philippines began as a small grassroots theatre group with just eight members. Over the past five decades, it has grown into one of the largest Filipino performing arts organizations in the region, with 188 active performing members. Nearly half of those performers are children between the ages of five and eleven, reflecting the group’s strong commitment to passing cultural traditions on to younger generations.
Magdaragat’s mission has always centered on both preserving and sharing Filipino culture. Performances blend traditional and contemporary styles, allowing audiences to experience different artistic expressions while highlighting the stories, music, and movement that are rooted in Filipino culture.
Many members begin performing with the group as children and later return as instructors or mentors, helping teach the next generation. This intergenerational approach has helped Magdaragat build a strong sense of community that continues to grow each year.

In 2026, Magdaragat Philippines Inc. celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking an important milestone for the organization and the Filipino community in Manitoba. While the official anniversary falls on June 12, 1976, coinciding with Philippine Independence Day, the celebration will take place on May 16, 2026, during Victoria Day long weekend to allow former members and supporters from outside Winnipeg to attend.
The anniversary celebration, held at Petrus Hall, will feature an evening of dinner, performances, and community celebration. Guests will enjoy a buffet dinner accompanied by a special performance program highlighting Magdaragat’s history. The show will be divided into two parts, the first recognizing the group’s early years under founder Dante C. Buenaventura, and the second celebrating the organization’s growth and evolution from 1988 to the present day.
Following the performance, the evening will continue with a Winnipeg-style social, complete with dancing, a silent auction, and a 50/50 draw. The event is open not only to current and past members but also to supporters and community members who have helped Magdaragat grow over the years.
Admission is $50. To purchase tickets, please contact Goldie Garcia at (204) 292-7921 or email magdaragat@hotmail.com.
