Authenticity and pride in Sicily: l’Ensemble folklorique de la Rivière-Rouge

Thanks to the generous support of Folklorama through the Cultural Preservation Fund (CPF) Award program, l’Ensemble folklorique de la Rivière-Rouge had the opportunity to represent Canada at the internationally acclaimed Mandorlo in Fiore festival in Agrigento, Sicily in the spring of 2025. This extraordinary gathering welcomed elite folk ensembles from around the world to share, celebrate, and preserve their respective cultures through music, dance, and tradition.
The funds awarded were used to create brand new costuming for our performers. This investment not only enhanced the visual impact of our troupe but also played a vital role in reinforcing the pride and professionalism of our young ambassadors. At a festival of this magnitude, where first impressions are crucial and presentation matters greatly, our vibrant and culturally rooted attire allowed the troupe to stand out while honouring the French-Canadian and Métis heritage we were there to share.
Throughout the festival, the troupe performed in grand theatres, outdoor piazzas, and intimate community settings, offering dynamic performances and leading engaging workshops on traditional dance, music, and games. The public response was overwhelmingly positive, and our group was officially recognized by festival organizers for their professionalism, talent, and charisma. The new costuming most certainly contributed to this recognition, helping to unify the troupe visually and express the energy and vitality of our cultural legacy.
For our young performers, this was not only an artistic journey, but a deeply meaningful cultural exchange. Wearing garments that reflected their heritage with authenticity and pride amplified their confidence and connection to the stories they were telling on stage. The experience also fostered dialogue and camaraderie with international artists, as we learned about other traditions while celebrating our own.
Canada had not been represented at this festival in many years. Thanks to this grant, we returned with strength and style, sharing our corner of the world with joy, elegance, and authenticity. We are sincerely grateful for this support, which allowed us to honour our past, inspire our youth, and contribute to the living story of global folk culture.

Grâce au généreux soutien de Folklorama, l’Ensemble folklorique de la Rivière-Rouge a eu l’immense privilège de représenter le Canada au prestigieux festival Mandorlo in Fiore, à Agrigente, en Sicile, au printemps 2025. Ce rassemblement d’envergure internationale accueille des ensembles folkloriques d’élite venus des quatre coins du monde pour célébrer, partager et préserver leurs cultures à travers la danse, la musique et les traditions.
Les fonds reçus ont servi à créer de nouveaux costumes pour nos jeunes interprètes. Cet investissement a non seulement rehaussé l’aspect visuel de nos prestations, mais il a aussi renforcé la fierté et le professionnalisme de nos ambassadeurs culturels. Lors d’un festival de cette ampleur , où l’apparence scénique a un impact majeur, nos costumes éclatants, inspirés de nos racines franco-canadiennes et métisses, ont permis à la troupe de se démarquer tout en rendant hommage à notre patrimoine.
Tout au long du festival, la troupe s’est produite dans de grandes salles de spectacle, sur des places publiques animées, ainsi que dans des milieux communautaires. Elle a aussi offert des ateliers interactifs mettant en valeur les danses, les chansons et les jeux traditionnels de chez nous. L’accueil du public a été des plus chaleureux, et notre groupe a été officiellement reconnu par les organisateurs pour son talent, son charisme et son professionnalisme. Sans aucun doute, la qualité des nouveaux costumes a contribué à cette reconnaissance, en unifiant visuellement la troupe et en reflétant la vitalité de notre culture.
Pour nos jeunes artistes, ce fut bien plus qu’un voyage artistique : ce fut une expérience profondément significative. Porter des vêtements qui reflètent leur héritage avec authenticité et fierté a renforcé leur confiance et leur sentiment d’appartenance. L’échange avec les artistes internationaux a aussi favorisé l’ouverture et la découverte mutuelle.
Cela faisait de nombreuses années que le Canada n’avait pas été représenté à ce festival. Grâce à cette subvention, nous y sommes retournés avec fierté, partageant notre culture avec joie, élégance et authenticité. Nous vous remercions sincèrement pour ce soutien précieux qui nous a permis d’honorer notre passé, d’inspirer notre jeunesse et de contribuer activement à la richesse du patrimoine folklorique mondial.
