Edom Getachew – Building Bridges Through Culture and Community
At just 17 years old, Edom Getachew is already making a meaningful impact on Winnipeg’s cultural landscape. Her journey with Folklorama began a few years ago as a volunteer, but it didn’t stop there. The following year, Edom proudly represented the Ethiopian Pavilion as an ambassador and when her term ended, Edom wasn’t ready to say goodbye. She joined the Folklorama Youth Council to stay connected and continue fostering cultural connections.
“That experience opened the door to the larger Folklorama community and helped me thrive,” she reflects. “It continues to shape who I am today and remain engaged in meaningful work with people who shared similar values,” she explains.
While there wasn’t a single moment that inspired her to get involved, Edom says the energy of the community and the passion of her peers drew her in. “Being surrounded by like-minded youth who genuinely care about giving back really intrigued me.”
One of the most rewarding parts of being on the Youth Council, according to Edom, is the people. “Some of the incredible, intelligent youth I’ve met through this role are people I never would have connected with otherwise, and I’m really grateful for that,” she says.
From organizing Cultural Connections workshops to dancing on stage at pavilions, Edom has embraced every opportunity to engage with the community. These joyful, unifying moments have become treasured memories—proof of the powerful role that culture and celebration can play in bringing people together.
Through it all, Edom has discovered more about herself, too. “I’ve grown more confident in myself, my capabilities, and my creativity,” she shares. “When youth are at the forefront of something, it can have an incredibly positive impact.”
Her message to other young people? Get involved. “You learn, you lead, and you grow, all while having fun and making new friends. Youth voices and energy have real power, and Folklorama gives us the platform to make a difference.”
Edom’s story is a shining example of how volunteering can evolve into leadership—and how one young person’s passion can inspire an entire community.
