Requires a computer\, laptop\, or mobile device with audio. \nArtist Biography\nShayleen McConnell Finucan is a certified ODCRN (Irish Dance Instructor) with Cumann Rince Náisiúnta (CRN) and has been involved with Folklorama since 1976.  McConnell Finucan has an extensive background in Irish music and dance.  McConnell Finucan is the Artistic Director and Choreographer for McConnell Irish Dancers\, one of the largest Irish dance schools in Western Canada. \nMcConnell Irish Dance is one of the oldest Irish dance groups in North America. Originally founded in Ireland over 80 years ago\, the school was established in Winnipeg\, Canada in 1947. \nMcConnell Dancers are recognized for their unique\, high calibre\, performance-style dancing which encompasses both traditional and contemporary forms of Irish Dance. \nMcConnell School of Dance is a member of Cumann Rince Náisiúnta (CRN)\, based in Dublin\, Ireland and their award-winning dancers compete at the CRN World Irish Dance Championships in Ireland. \nThe dancers have performed at the Olympic Games\, Commonwealth Games\, and with well-known performers such as “The Irish Rovers”\, “Tommy Makem”\, and “The Irish Descendants”.  The group has travelled the world to perform at International Dance Festivals\, Peru (2007)\, Costa Rica (2009)\, Bulgaria (2011)\, Disney World (2012)\, Ireland\, (2013)\, Peru (2016)\, North Carolina (2017). \nMcConnell Irish Dancers have been involved with Folklorama for over 45 years and are the sponsoring organization of the United Kingdom Pavilion.

Beadwork has since been an important part of her life and a reminder of who she is and where she comes from. Every project she works on\, big or small\, and each class she teaches\, with well-versed beaders or beginners\, comes with new teachings\, new tricks and more history. \nAs a proud Métis woman and teacher\, she believes in the importance of sharing the art of beadwork so that it can continue to represent the creativity\, strength and resilience of our Métis Nation. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music at Estácio de Sá University in Rio de Janeiro in 1994\, he instantly began touring South America with Brazil’s hottest bands. \nSince moving to Canada in 2006\, he has performed in festivals around the globe\, and has recorded and produced a plethora of musical projects. Whether it’s his work as a solo artist\, his full 8 piece “Brazilian Beats” band\, or collaborations with the Winnipeg Jazz and Symphony Orchestras\, Ron Paley’s Big Band\, or artists such as George Coligan\, Luis Carlos Batera (Banda Black Rio)\, and Kiko Freitas (João Bosco)\, Castillo always brings an unparalleled sound. \nCastillo has three full-length CDs under his belt: Brazilian Season (2008)\, Trip to Brazil (2012) which was awarded World Recording of the Year in Regina as part of the Western Canadian Music Awards\, and Zabelê (2014)\, which was also nominated in the WCMA. Marco Castillo was also a finalist for the 2015 Viña del Mar music festival in Chile\, one of the most important music festivals in Latin America\, which is broadcasted and seen by over 150\,000\,000 fans around the world. \nCastillo not only has always a passion for his music\, but also for spreading Brazilian culture\, and sharing its unique rhythms and sounds. He always seeks to enrich his own knowledge\, and is currently taking lessons with Jovinho Santos Neto\, who played with Hermeto Pascoal for over 15 years. He teaches guitar\, bass\, Brazilian percussion\, music perception\, and music theory\, and has been a member of Folklorama since moving to Winnipeg.

As a young child\, he was taught much about his culture by members of his village and its elders. As a young man\, Evans had the opportunity to travel around Ghana to most of its villages\, where he learned the different regional dances and rhythms from their elders. In this journey he was blessed to learn so much about his own history and richness of his culture. \nEvans then toured the world with the National Dance Ensemble of Ghana as one of their principal dancers\, bringing this richness of culture to the world. In this journey with the dance company\, he discovered the beauty of Canada and decided to become part of its landscape. Bringing all his talent with him\, Coffieman was born. As a teaching and performing artist\, Evans now tours the country offering rocking African shows that includes entertainment for the whole family\, from his Jungle songs and animal calls\, to his fancifully fast fingers on the drum. \nAfrican culture is Evans’s heritage; he places much respect in this and those who came before to pass it on. Evans believes that it is his legacy to continue this tradition.

He was a part of the Manitoba Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools resident programs and has been featured on numerous television programs. \nOne of his most rewarding accomplishments was organizing the 1\,000 crane display that was presented to the Japanese Cultural Association by volunteers and visitors from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Cox is also the proud grandfather of two beautiful grandchildren.

It was the beginning of playing music in Winnipeg. The Paradize Band of Winnipeg was formed. The band was playing at venues here and there when they heard that Folklorama was starting up a local performer agency. \nSince 1996\, the Paradize Band of Winnipeg has become an integral member of Folklorama\, performing at Canada Day\, receptions\, and teaching in schools and daycares across the city. Clyde Heerah and his band are also the house band at the Africa-Caribbean Pavilion during Folklorama.

Their mission is to promote traditional and modern Chinese & Dragon dance styles to future generations\, contribute to the enrichment of multiculturalism in Manitoba and provide an opportunity for youth to be involved in the preservation of their culture. The team has performed across Canada\, the United States and internationally in Chile at various major festivals\, corporate events\, and grand openings. \nThe Chinese Lion Dance is a traditional dance done in which two performers mimic a lion’s movements. The Troupe trains on a Lion Dance focused curriculum\, which results in their ability to perform traditional floor routines\, shows with props and modern competition style performances on poles ranging from three to nine and a half feet. The Lion may be seen with the Happy Buddha\, accompanying in various stories told through the performance. The Chinese lion dance symbolizes bringing good luck and prosperity each year to their guests and audience!

He was the Storyteller in Residence at the University of Manitoba and is recognized by Storytellers of Canada as a Master Storyteller\, Rob draws on his background as an Educational Programs Developer at the Manitoba Museum and as a Professor in the Tourism Department of l’Université de St. Boniface to delight audiences through storytelling\, music and song. \nTiBert le Voyageur is at once a historically based character\, a living role model\, and a cartoon hero; he simultaneously captures the imagination of spectators of all ages. An engaging mixture of juggling\, storytelling\, improvisation\, humour\, interactive plays\, sing-along songs\, historical musical instruments\, traditional costuming and props\, beatboxing\, in either or both Canadian official languages describes a TiBert show. The audience is engaged in a shared experience from which a common Canadian identity is created and cherished for a lifetime. Malo has been a part of the Folklorama family for over 10 years.

For over 25 years Ray has facilitated Pow Wow clubs educating people of all ages on Indigenous song and dance. Ray is currently facilitating Pow Wow clubs at the University of Winnipeg\, University of Manitoba also working with 5 different School divisions. He has travelled to Italy\, France\, and Germany sharing his gift. He has performed at the Olympics and world games\, and at award shows throughout North America\, including in New Orleans\, San Francisco\, New York City\, and Washington DC. Ray has been a member of Folklorama for over 20 years\, performing and sharing his culture in all programs.

DESCRIPTION:Workshop Details\nUkraine\, often called the breadbasket of Europe\, has many customs and traditions revolving around wheat and bread. Ukrainian breads can be elaborately decorated with braids\, flowers and birds\, also made out of dough. If you have any questions\, please contact marketing@folklorama.ca. \nWe will be taking our guests through our beautiful Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony step by step. Traditionally when coffee is made there is a set up and there is 1 coffee maker who makes coffee for the whole group. In this workshop you will learn how to set up for your ceremony and make coffee from start to finish. Our coffee is made from scratch every time\, therefore we will be using raw coffee beans. We will roast it\, grind it and boil it and make fresh coffee. We will be using traditionally equipment like our famous Jebna\, which is a clay pot to boil the coffee. We also will be using Sini which is just a small cup to drink the coffee with. Get top quality Irish dance instruction by the award-winning dancers from McConnell Irish Dance who will show you how to get started and have fun! \nThe origins of Irish dance can be traced back to Druidic times\, but what we think of as Irish dance had its beginnings in the mid-eighteenth century. Irish dance evolved through the work of Irish Dance Masters who travelled the country teaching dance from village to village. In the last 30 years\, Irish dance has achieved world-wide recognition with renowned touring shows like “Riverdance” and “Lord of the Dance”.  Today Irish dance organizations and schools can be found in nearly every country and Irish dance competitions are held all over the world. \nPlease Note: This is an online workshop. Requires a computer\, laptop or mobile device with audio. \nArtist Biography\nShayleen McConnell Finucan is a certified ODCRN (Irish Dance Instructor) with Cumann Rince Náisiúnta (CRN) and has been involved with Folklorama since 1976.  McConnell Finucan has an extensive background in Irish music and dance.  McConnell Finucan is the Artistic Director and Choreographer for McConnell Irish Dancers\, one of the largest Irish dance schools in Western Canada. \nMcConnell Irish Dance is one of the oldest Irish dance groups in North America. Originally founded in Ireland over 80 years ago\, the school was established in Winnipeg\, Canada in 1947. \nMcConnell Dancers are recognized for their unique\, high calibre\, performance-style dancing which encompasses both traditional and contemporary forms of Irish Dance. \nMcConnell School of Dance is a member of Cumann Rince Náisiúnta (CRN)\, based in Dublin\, Ireland and their award-winning dancers compete at the CRN World Irish Dance Championships in Ireland. \nThe dancers have performed at the Olympic Games\, Commonwealth Games\, and with well-known performers such as “The Irish Rovers”\, “Tommy Makem”\, and “The Irish Descendants”.  The group has travelled the world to perform at International Dance Festivals\, Peru (2007)\, Costa Rica (2009)\, Bulgaria (2011)\, Disney World (2012)\, Ireland\, (2013)\, Peru (2016)\, North Carolina (2017). \nMcConnell Irish Dancers have been involved with Folklorama for over 45 years and are the sponsoring organization of the United Kingdom Pavilion. \nSign up for free!

In this workshop\, Marco Castillo will bring you in on the secrets and rhythms of Rio de Janeiro\, and see how the unique concoction of African culture and European influence makes Brazilian music one-of-a-kind. Come be a part of the rhythm\, the music\, and the celebration with a passionate artist plucked from the heart of Brazil\, Rio de Janeiro — the world’s capital of Samba and Carnaval. \nPlease Note: This is an online workshop. Requires a computer\, laptop or mobile device with audio. \nArtist Biography\nMulti-instrumentalist\, composer\, and producer Marco Castillo was born in the capital of Samba\, and specializes in Brazilian guitar and Latin music. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music at Estácio de Sá University in Rio de Janeiro in 1994\, he instantly began touring South America with Brazil’s hottest bands. \nSince moving to Canada in 2006\, he has performed in festivals around the globe\, and has recorded and produced a plethora of musical projects. Whether it’s his work as a solo artist\, his full 8 piece “Brazilian Beats” band\, or collaborations with the Winnipeg Jazz and Symphony Orchestras\, Ron Paley’s Big Band\, or artists such as George Coligan\, Luis Carlos Batera (Banda Black Rio)\, and Kiko Freitas (João Bosco)\, Castillo always brings an unparalleled sound. \nCastillo has three full-length CDs under his belt: Brazilian Season (2008)\, Trip to Brazil (2012) which was awarded World Recording of the Year in Regina as part of the Western Canadian Music Awards\, and Zabelê (2014)\, which was also nominated in the WCMA. Marco Castillo was also a finalist for the 2015 Viña del Mar music festival in Chile\, one of the most important music festivals in Latin America\, which is broadcasted and seen by over 150\,000\,000 fans around the world. \nCastillo not only has always a passion for his music\, but also for spreading Brazilian culture\, and sharing its unique rhythms and sounds. He always seeks to enrich his own knowledge\, and is currently taking lessons with Jovinho Santos Neto\, who played with Hermeto Pascoal for over 15 years. Join Clyde Heerah on this virtual presentation on one of the most unique musical instruments found anywhere in the world. Discover its origins and listen and take in the sounds of the Caribbean as you hear the beautiful melodies of the islands. \nPlease Note: This is an online workshop. Requires a computer\, laptop or mobile device with audio. \nArtist Biography\nAt an early age\, Clyde Heerah emigrated from the island of Trinidad and Tobago.  After school on weekends\, Heerah and some of his classmates would get together and have a jam session. It was the beginning of playing music in Winnipeg. The Paradize Band of Winnipeg was formed. The band was playing at venues here and there when they heard that Folklorama was starting up a local performer agency. \nSince 1996\, the Paradize Band of Winnipeg has become an integral member of Folklorama\, performing at Canada Day\, receptions\, and teaching in schools and daycares across the city. In Japan\, references to origami date back to the 1600s\, when poems referenced celebratory events with gifts of paper models. The paper models were attached to gifts\, much like greeting cards are today. Since then\, origami has developed into a world of creativity\, right at our finger tips. If you’re a beginner or intermediate looking for a unique experience\, join Brian Cox as he teaches the ins and outs of the art of origami! A free of charge kit\, available only to residents of Manitoba\, containing everything you need to participate in the class will be sent to you upon registration. His whimsical workshops have been featured at children’s festivals\, conferences\, Canada Day celebrations\, school divisions\, opening of Children’s Hospitals\, fairs\, and of course\, at Folklorama events. He was a part of the Manitoba Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools resident programs and has been featured on numerous television programs. \nOne of his most rewarding accomplishments was organizing the 1\,000 crane display that was presented to the Japanese Cultural Association by volunteers and visitors from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Requires a computer\, laptop or mobile device with audio. \nArtist Biography\n \nThe Flying Lion Dance Troupe is Manitoba’s authentic Chinese Lion & Dragon Dance team that aims to provide the best in Chinese culture and entertainment. Their mission is to promote traditional and modern Chinese & Dragon dance styles to future generations\, contribute to the enrichment of multiculturalism in Manitoba and provide an opportunity for youth to be involved in the preservation of their culture. The team has performed across Canada\, the United States and internationally in Chile at various major festivals\, corporate events\, and grand openings. \nThe Chinese Lion Dance is a traditional dance done in which two performers mimic a lion’s movements. The Troupe trains on a Lion Dance focused curriculum\, which results in their ability to perform traditional floor routines\, shows with props and modern competition style performances on poles ranging from three to nine and a half feet. The Lion may be seen with the Happy Buddha\, accompanying in various stories told through the performance. Explore the different rhythms and movements offered by Mother Africa through modern authentic African percussion\, song\, storytelling and dance. Come to the jungle and join the animal calls\, drum along to the tribal beats\, dance to your inner spirit and learn hidden stories from Ghana Africa\, composed and performed with a Coffieman twist. \nPlease Note: This is an online workshop. Requires a computer\, laptop or mobile device with audio. \nArtist Biography\n \nEvans Coffie is blessed to have been born in Ghana\, West Africa\, which is steeped in a rich and diverse culture. As a young child\, he was taught much about his culture by members of his village and its elders. As a young man\, Evans had the opportunity to travel around Ghana to most of its villages\, where he learned the different regional dances and rhythms from their elders. In this journey he was blessed to learn so much about his own history and richness of his culture. \nEvans then toured the world with the National Dance Ensemble of Ghana as one of their principal dancers\, bringing this richness of culture to the world. In this journey with the dance company\, he discovered the beauty of Canada and decided to become part of its landscape. Bringing all his talent with him\, Coffieman was born. As a teaching and performing artist\, Evans now tours the country offering rocking African shows that includes entertainment for the whole family\, from his Jungle songs and animal calls\, to his fancifully fast fingers on the drum. \nAfrican culture is Evans’s heritage; he places much respect in this and those who came before to pass it on. Beadwork has since been an important part of her life and a reminder of who she is and where she comes from. Every project she works on\, big or small\, and each class she teaches\, with well-versed beaders or beginners\, comes with new teachings\, new tricks and more history. \nAs a proud Métis woman and teacher\, she believes in the importance of sharing the art of beadwork so that it can continue to represent the creativity\, strength and resilience of our Métis Nation. Join TiBert le Voyageur on this virtual adventure and come away with knowledge on the art of becoming a Voyageur\, how they entertained around the fire\, and history of the Francophone and Métis culture. \nPlease Note: This is an online workshop. Requires a computer\, laptop or mobile device with audio. \nArtist Biography\nRob Malo\, also known as TiBert le Voyageur is a Franco-Manitoban Métis storyteller\, author\, stage performer\, juggler\, poet\, and community builder who shares his passion for history and culture with people of all ages. He was the Storyteller in Residence at the University of Manitoba and is recognized by Storytellers of Canada as a Master Storyteller\, Rob draws on his background as an Educational Programs Developer at the Manitoba Museum and as a Professor in the Tourism Department of l’Université de St. Boniface to delight audiences through storytelling\, music and song. \nTiBert le Voyageur is at once a historically based character\, a living role model\, and a cartoon hero; he simultaneously captures the imagination of spectators of all ages. An engaging mixture of juggling\, storytelling\, improvisation\, humour\, interactive plays\, sing-along songs\, historical musical instruments\, traditional costuming and props\, beatboxing\, in either or both Canadian official languages describes a TiBert show. The audience is engaged in a shared experience from which a common Canadian identity is created and cherished for a lifetime.
