Folklorama Next Level: Preserving the past to inspire the future
Winnipeg, MB – August 4th, 2020 – Seeing the need to help the struggling ethno-cultural communities they serve, Folklorama announced a brand new division to their organization – the Folklorama Cultural Preservation Fund.
“Folklorama’s mission and vision have always been to provide opportunities for ethno-cultural communities to promote and celebrate their intangible heritage,” states Stan Hall, President, Folklorama Board of Directors. “Today Folklorama will be taking it one step further, raising money to grant our ethno-cultural communities funds to assist in cultural preservation. From providing financial assistance for children to learn ethno-cultural dance, to assisting performing groups the opportunity to travel when they can, to summer camps to teach cultural diversity, to scholarships for youth, Folklorama Cultural Preservation Fund will take the Folklorama mission to the next level. This is why we do it.”
“What a beautiful announcement,” states Delvinder Kaur, Co-ordinator of the 2019 Punjab Pavilion. “It’s been hard for communities to fund projects that help grow our cultures. Folklorama is taking the message of preserving cultures in a whole new level by having the (Folklorama Cultural Preservation) Fund. Our communities will have more opportunities to promote diversity and educate in so many ways. To think that children will have a chance to learn dance or take a language class…it’s going to make such a difference and benefit so many.”

- All the money made in the Pavilions, stay in the Pavilions.
- 96% of Pavilions saw a profit in 2019.
- Currently, Pavilions use the money they raise for some the following:
-Cultural Attire for dancers and performing artists
-Supporting Cultural Centres mortgages, purchased with revenues through ongoing participation in Folklorama festivals
-International travel to share culture with other festivals
-Performers
-Language classes, music programs
-Older adults outreach programs, summer camps for kids
- In May, due to Covid-19 and the cancellation of the 2020 Festival, Folklorama pivoted their Festival model to include Folklorama At Home, Folklorama At Work, Folklorama At School, Folklorama At Play, delivering ethno-cultural experiences while meeting with government regulations. This model continues to be successful for local ethno-cultural groups. To date, Folklorama has booked over 60 performances. This business model will now run 365 days a year. These programs provide a source of income for local ethno-cultural entertainers, educators, and caterers/restaurants.
- Folklorama is the only Festival in Canada to offer an “at home” version of their Festival.
